Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (R-VA) is calling on his friends in the House GOP to help him beat a challenge this November.

Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Andrew Clyde (R-GA), and Andy Biggs (R-AZ) traveled to Good’s district in rural southern Virginia to appeal to voters to support Good. A small crowd of around 75 people gathered to hear Freedom Caucus members promote their leader, according to the Washington Post

“We’ve got a one-seat majority,” Biggs said at the event. “Imagine if the one-seat majority consisted of somebody other than Bob Good from your district. That would be a disaster.”

Good belongs to a GOP group that has defied leadership in recent months. He was one of eight Republicans who voted to oust then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy late last year.

Other Republicans such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA) have endorsed his Republican challenger, state Sen. John McGuire. She joined other members to campaign for McGuire in northern Virginia this weekend. Good was not pleased.

“He goes up to Washington, D.C., to host his fundraisers with the RINO establishment moderates that he can’t bring to the 5th District and campaign for him,” Good said at his event in southern Virginia. “Because if he brought his friends here, it would actually help me, and I would owe them an in-kind campaign contribution.”

While Good is whipping support in the GOP conference, he faces an even greater challenge convincing the country’s most important Republican to back him.

During the Republican primary debates, Good endorsed Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) over former President Donald Trump. Despite endorsing Trump minutes after DeSantis dropped out of the race, his original endorsement didn’t sit well with Trump.

“Bob Good won’t be electable by the time we get done with him,” said Chris LaCivita, Trump’s campaign manager.

Good has since tried to get closer to Trump.

“I think the Trump team recognizes that I am a genuine Trump supporter,” Good told the Washington Post. “I’ve said many times that he was the greatest president of my lifetime. I supported him in 2016. I supported him in 2020. I supported him last year and this year. I said I would enthusiastically endorse and support him as our nominee.”

McGuire originally challenged Good because of Good’s endorsement of DeSantis over Trump. He has declined to comment on a Trump endorsement directly but hinted that he is in better standing with the former president than Good is.

“I was invited to speak onstage,” McGuire said. “Bob Good was not. I was invited to go get a photograph with my wife and Trump. Bob Good was not. Bob Good was not even invited to the rally, but he wiggled his way in. He did not get a photograph. He was not allowed to speak.”

McGuire also said he has heard from constituents in Good’s district who said they are unhappy with their representative, calling him “too abrasive.” If elected, McGuire said he would consider joining the Freedom Caucus and wants to work more collaboratively with fellow lawmakers.

“I’d be a reasonable human being,” McGuire said.
