House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) targeted Vice President Kamala Harris during a border visit to Southern California, blaming her for allowing noncitizens to vote.

Johnson’s comments came as he visited the San Ysidro Port of Entry alongside Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) on Friday. The Republican leader called San Diego “the epicenter of the Biden-Harris border catastrophe” as he blamed Democrats and urged Congress to pass an election integrity bill that prevents illegal immigrants from voting in U.S. elections.

As he held a press conference at the migrant hot spot, Johnson said he believes roughly 16 million illegal immigrants have crossed into the United States during the Biden-Harris administration. The Republican leader proceeded to call out “the border czar and San Francisco-radical Kamala Harris,” saying she “bears responsibility for this disaster.”

Johnson worried that if “just a fraction” of illegal immigrants vote, they could flip critical congressional seats and even change the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.

The House speaker expressed concern over voter registration laws from the 1990s that he believes could allow illegal immigrants to vote in U.S. elections.

“If someone goes to the local office to sign up for public benefits, they’re also handed a short form that says, ‘Do you want to register to vote?’” Johnson warned during the press conference. He said it is “outrageous” that “there’s no proof required” to vote and claimed Harris “want[s] to allow illegal aliens to decide American elections.”

The law in California states that to register to vote you must be “a United States citizen and a resident of California.” However, the documents required to register, which include a driver’s license, a state ID, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and verification of your birth date, may not indicate citizenship.

Johnson said the SAVE Act, passed by the House earlier this month, is the key to ensuring election integrity. Johnson slammed “Kamala Harris and 198 House Democrats” for opposing the legislation that requires proof of ID in order to vote.

“Only Americans should decide American elections,” Johnson said.
