Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the attention she gets online for the unique way she laughs.
Harris talked about the origin of her laugh in a yet-to-be-released segment of Drew the daytime talk show hosted by actress Drew Barrymore. While the interview in its entirety will air Monday, a clip circulated on X.
“You were asking me earlier about what it means to be, like, the first woman. And, you know, it’s funny, because people still got to get used to this, right?” Harris said of being the first female vice president. “I mean, my staff, for example, sometimes they’ll show me little things that just amuse me. Like, apparently, some people love to talk about the way I laugh.”
“Oh yes! I love your laugh,” Barrymore responded.
“Well Let me tell you something: I have my mother’s laugh. And I grew up around a bunch of women in particular who laughed from the belly,” Harris said. “And I think it’s really important for us to remind each other and our younger ones, don’t be confined to other people’s perception about what this looks like, and how you should act in order to be right?”

The vice president claimed she will “never” change her laugh to be more demure, and jokingly imitated a shy laugh by covering her mouth. Barrymore leaned into Harris as she spoke and assured Harris again she loves the laugh.
Harris is in the middle of a reelection campaign. Her recent efforts have crept further into popular culture, as she is the first sitting vice president of Barrymore’s program. Reality TV star Kim Kardashian visited the White House last week at the invitation of Harris to celebrate 16 drug offenders President Joe Biden granted clemency.
