White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller became increasingly frustrated during an appearance on CNN, in which he stood by the Trump administration’s work to downsize federal spending with the Department of Government Efficiency.
Miller defended President Donald Trump‘s appointment of advisers, including himself and DOGE head Elon Musk, to work within the government, arguing this is “how democracy works” in that people vote for a president who then recruits people to serve on his staff. When pressed by CNN’s Brianna Keilar on why the Trump administration had rescinded the termination of hundreds of National Nuclear Security Administration employees, Miller chuckled, stating that a temporary interruption in federal employment is “a great crisis” for CNN. He noted that voters, meanwhile, are experiencing a government “finally” delivering accountability.
“You want to have a conversation about transparency. Let me ask you a question,” Miller stated on CNN. “Do you have any idea where the $22 billion that the Department of Health and Human Services provided to illegal aliens under Joe Biden is right now? Twenty-two billion with a ‘B.’ That’s enough to provide a free house to every homeless veteran in America. Where’s the $22 billion? I don’t know, you don‘t know, nobody knows! Joe Biden just spent it and now it’s gone!”
Later in the interview, Miller stated that people are “exhausted” having their taxpayer dollars “robbed and stolen from them.” He began to state that some people may assert there is no waste before Keilar claimed she does not think anyone would assert this. This prompted Miller to shout, “If you agree there is corruption, why are you not celebrating the cuts, the reforms that are being instituted?”
Keilar then stated, “Let’s calm down.”
Miller was also asked about his recent claim that illegal immigrants are receiving child tax credits, to which he warned that the federal government would find every illegal immigrant who is “stealing” taxpayer dollars. He added that no one is “given permission to break the law” any longer.

“If illegal aliens can freely steal billions with a ‘B,’ billions of taxpayer dollars, and I would have to imagine that CNN, which has endlessly talked about the importance of democracy and the rule of law, would say that no class in this country should be above the law, least of all illegal aliens who have trespassed on our territory,” Miller stated.
Keilar then claimed that she wanted to get Miller’s “position” on certain topics and that CNN itself was not taking any position. Miller retorted that he did not feel CNN was “indifferent or unbiased” with its questions.
