The Internal Revenue Service issued a final reminder that an estimated 940,000 people across the United States who didn’t file their 2020 tax year returns could be eligible for a return.

The IRS owes more than $1 billion in unclaimed refunds to nearly 1 million people, including many who reside in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The deadline to file the refunds is Friday.

In Washington, the IRS estimates 2,900 people could get money back, and some may receive up to $968. The IRS estimates around 22,000 Marylanders could be owed back an average of $991. In Virginia, the IRS estimates that 25,900 people could be owed back an average of $914 each.

The IRS said there is “no penalty for failure to file if a refund is due,” but it said refunds must be filed three years after that year’s filing deadline. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the typical April 15 deadline got pushed back to May 17, which means Friday marks three years.

Some people could also be eligible for additional refunds from programs that began during the pandemic, such as the COVID-era Recovery Rebate Credit in 2020.

“The Recovery Rebate Credit is a refundable credit for individuals who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments, also known as stimulus payments, distributed in 2020 and 2021,” the IRS said in a statement.

Other states are also eligible for millions in refunds.
