For the first time all week, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the country decreased on Friday. The new price is $3.209, a very slight drop from Thursday’s price of $3.212. The cost of gas had increased four straight days prior to the release of Friday’s pricing.

Gas prices are a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, has to indicate how she will address the country’s gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas remains the lowest since January 2024, when it was $3.075. Despite the recent trend of decreases, gas prices have fluctuated throughout the year and vary significantly among states. Maryland

Gas prices decreased again in Maryland on Friday, as the average cost for a gallon of regular gas fell to $3.238. This was a slight drop from Thursday’s price of $3.245. However, despite the decrease at the pumps, gas prices in the state remain slightly more expensive than a week ago, when drivers paid $3.224 per gallon. They are also higher than a month ago when regular gas was $3.138 per gallon.

Delaware

Gas prices fell for the second straight day in Delaware on Friday, bucking the recent trend across the country. A gallon of regular gas in the state now costs $3.194, a slight decrease from Thursday’s price of $3.204. However, gas prices in Delaware remain higher than a week ago, when regular gas was $3.172 per gallon. They are also more expensive than a month ago when a gallon of regular gas cost only $3.05.

Virginia

Unlike other states in the Delmarva region, gas prices continued to rise in Virginia on Friday. A gallon of regular gas now costs $3.133, an increase of nearly twelve cents from a week ago. Gas prices in the state are also more expensive than a month ago, when regular gas was $3.103 per gallon.

Washington, D.C.

Gas prices in Washington, D.C., remained steady on Friday, with the city’s average for a gallon of regular gas at $3.292. This was slightly less expensive than a week ago when regular gas was $3.301 per gallon in the nation’s capital. Prices have substantially dropped in the nation’s capital from a month ago, when regular gas was $3.51 per gallon.

Georgia

Georgia edged out Mississippi for the third straight day and remained the state in the country with the cheapest gas. A gallon of regular gas cost $2.717 on Friday in the Peach State, a slight decrease from Thursday’s price of $2.726. A week ago, gas was over 12 cents higher, costing $2.838 per gallon. A month ago, gas prices were even more expensive, coming in at $3.03 per gallon.

California

California remained the state with the most expensive gas in the nation on Friday, with a price of $4.668 for a gallon of regular gas. This slightly dropped from Thursday, when regular gas cost $4.67 per gallon. Despite the decrease, the cost of regular gas is very close to the price in the state compared to a week ago when a gallon of regular cost $4.667, only very slightly more expensive. However, prices are cheaper than a month ago, when drivers paid $4.749 per gallon for regular gas.
