You’ve probably heard the headlines — and, if you’re the kind of person who leads a busy life who doesn’t have the time to read past the first few paragraphs of every story and dig into the details of it, you might not be familiar with what occurred.
However, the prevailing narrative was succinctly described by The New York Times’ front-page headline/subheadline, which the paper made its lead story on Friday night: “Trump Deletes Racist Video of Obamas After Outcry; The White House press secretary had dismissed criticism of the clip’s racist content as ‘fake outrage.’ But later Friday, the clip disappeared from the president’s social media feed.”
Indeed, you could practically track the progression of the story’s narrative through the headlines alone. CNBC: “Trump posts racist image showing Obamas as apes, White House defends it.” The Hill: ” Tim Scott calls Obamas video shared by Trump ‘most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.’” Also The Hill: “GOP breaks with Trump White House on Obama post as Tim Scott opens the floodgates.” CBS News: “White House removes Trump post with racist footage of Obamas hours after defending it.”
