Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) criticized the indictment of former President Donald Trump on Thursday, claiming there’s an “uneven application of the law,” suggesting political bias was at play.
“Why so zealous in pursuing Trump yet so passive about Hillary or Hunter?” DeSantis tweeted, referring to two investigations that have not produced any federal charges.

During the 2016 election, the U.S. State Department investigated Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state and found no evidence of mishandling. President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, is currently the subject of a federal criminal inquiry involving accusations of a bribery scheme involving a foreign national.
Tensions have been rising between Trump and DeSantis, as the former president is the Florida governor’s fiercest competition for the 2024 presidential Republican nomination, with both candidates polling high in the primary process.
Attacks among both candidates were fueled as DeSantis rose to popularity in Republican circles, shaping him up to be a notable front-runner in the 2024 election.
Trump has attacked DeSantis numerous times during interviews and on Truth Social, racking up several nicknames to use for the Florida governor.
DeSantis said Trump has run nearly $20 million in negative ads about him with “frivolous and false smears,” he told Fox News Radio host Brian Kilmeade on Monday.

DeSantis once used his relationship with the former president as a favorable talking point, releasing an ad during his run for governor of Florida in 2018, reading The Art of the Deal to his child and building a wall in his home, nodding to Trump’s policies. DeSantis told TV personality John Stossel that the ad was satirical this year.
While the battleground is expected to be intense for DeSantis as he hopes to defeat Trump and win the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, the frontrunners and fellow Republicans are rallying around critiques of federal law enforcement.
“The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society,” DeSantis tweeted. “The DeSantis administration will bring accountability to the DOJ, excise political bias and end weaponization once and for all,” he concluded.
