Former Vice President Mike Pence appeared at the North Carolina GOP convention Saturday to send another message Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Pence repeated a message he initially shared during a radio interview on Friday, where he asked Garland to address the nation about the Department of Justice’s unprecedented indictment of former President Donald Trump. Pence is running against Trump for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election.

“Today, I’m calling on the attorney general to stand before the American people and explain why this was necessary in his words,” Pence said. “Attorney General Merrick Garland, stop hiding behind the special counsel and stand before the American people and explain why this indictment went forward.”
Pence also asked the same of special counsel Jack Smith since Garland appointed him to oversee the investigation into Trump, who is next set to appear in court on Tuesday, June 13, at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He has denied any wrongdoing.
“Know that we will soon know the facts. And I also encourage you to pray. Pray for the former president and his family. Pray for all those in positions of authority. And pray for this divided nation,” Pence said.
This latest indictment against the former president includes 37 federal charges surrounding accusations that Trump mishandled classified documents after leaving the White House.

Pence is facing off against Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), in the race to win the GOP presidential nomination.
Both Pence and Haley are polling at 4% according to a recent poll. That result could mean that the former vice president will qualify for the Republican primary debate.
