Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND) has gone on a spending spree since entering the 2024 presidential race, outspending every other Republican.
Burgum, a relatively unknown candidate, is apparently looking to make up the vast distance between him and the Republican front-runners by tapping into his personal fortune. According to the ad-tracking firm AdImpact, the North Dakota governor has already spent $2.9 million since entering the race on June 7, NBC reported.

Burgum has outspent the next biggest spender over the same period, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), by a factor of two. He also narrowly outspent the DeSantis-aligned Never Back Down PAC and Trump-aligned MAGA Inc., which spent $2.9 million and $2.8 million, respectively.
Despite his spending blitz, Burgum is still polling at just 0.3%, according to a RealClearPolitics average. Part of his hope with his spending spree is to gather 40,000 independent donors that will allow him onto the 2024 Republican primary debate stage, where he can increase his profile.
Burgum is pitching his run as one focused on the economy and national security. His campaign announcement focused more on energy and the economy, a departure from many of his Republican rivals.

“To unlock the best of America, we need a leader who’s clearly focused on three things: economy, energy, and national security. And that is why today I’m officially announcing I’m running for the president,” Burgum proclaimed at an event in Fargo, North Dakota, on June 7.
