Robert F. Kennedy Jr. acknowledged former President Donald Trump’s praise during a NewsNation town hall Wednesday.

The Democratic presidential candidate was asked what he thought about the support he’s received not only from the former president but former Fox News host Tucker Carlson and podcaster Alex Jones as well. Kennedy pointed to his late father’s example, who, while running for president in 1968, won the support of the largely Republican state of South Dakota. Kennedy’s father was assassinated in Los Angeles, California, three months after launching his campaign.

“And, you know, my father was able to harness these populace energies,” Kennedy said. “And so, I’m proud that President Trump likes me, even though I don’t agree with him on most of these issues, because I don’t want to alienate people. I want to bring people together. I’m proud that all these people like me and that I have independent supporters and Democratic supporters.”

From the beginning of his campaign, Kennedy promised he wouldn’t “attack other people personally” because he claimed it “isn’t good for our country.” He went on to accuse other Democratic politicians of not “talking to people who don’t agree with [them].”

“My purpose is to find the issues, the values that we have in common, rather than focus on the issues and the personalities that keep us all apart,” Kennedy said.
