The Barbie film has made $502.6 million since its release three weeks ago, which is officially the highest-grossing film by a female director domestically.
Greta Gerwig’s latest creation beat Frozen II domestically, which had a female co-director. The Disney sequel is still the highest-grossing film internationally. The Super Mario Bros. Movie remains the highest-grossing film overall in the domestic box office this year by $70 million.

During the third week of the film’s release, it earned $40 million. It had the best opening weekend in terms of domestic box office sales. It has yet to be released in Japan, which has added to the financial successes of other films. It has already grossed over $1 billion domestically.
Its cast includes Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Will Ferrell. Robbie, as the titular character, produced the film and sought out Gerwig to write and direct the film.
Vietnam banned the movie, and China nearly followed suit due to a controversy over a map depiction in one scene that appeared to show the “nine-dash line,” a cartographic feature Beijing uses to exert its unlawful territorial claims over most of the South China Sea. As a result, Barbie came in sixth place in opening-day ticket sales in China.
Conservative talk show host Ben Shapiro issued his own scathing review of the film for its attacks on the patriarchy and for being too “woke.”
“As predicted, ain’t no Barbie money in China,” Shapiro posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, after its opening weekend.

Gerwig admitted on The View that she personally didn’t play with the Barbie toy, as her mother treated it like a “forbidden fruit.” Many more toys and accessories have come out of the film’s popularity.
Only three of the 53 films in history to surpass $1 billion in international sales have featured female directors.
