President Joe Biden appears to be in trouble when it comes to voters of color, a key demographic for Democrats ahead of the 2024 elections.

A group of eight men of color who voted for Biden in 2020 painted a bleak picture of the United States economy under the president in a study group last week. Some even claimed they preferred the economy under former President Donald Trump.

“Our economy is the lowest it’s been in god knows how long,” a Hispanic respondent who lives in New Jersey said, according to Politico. “We keep [sending] money to Ukraine and other countries rather than helping ourselves.”

The focus group’s biggest complaint was the economy, but the respondents also scored the president and his administration with zeroes on border issues and a rise in crime. The results come as support for Democrats by Latinos and the black community is slipping.

In a recent Quinnipiac poll, 35% of black voters said they disapprove of Biden’s handling of the economy, a far cry from how he performed with the group in 2020. Roughly 50% of Hispanics also disapproved of his handling of the economy. The Democratic National Committee has said its efforts to reach voters of color are wide-ranging, including its continuance of its “Campaign Readiness Project,” and conducting in-person events to tout the administration’s accomplishments.

The slip has given hope to Republican 2024 presidential hopefuls, who see a record number of conservative people of color seeking the nomination. Six candidates are considered people of color, including Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.

Although the focus group was largely united on its dislike of the Biden administration’s handling of certain issues, one respondent said he is hoping there will be an alternative to both Trump and Biden. All respondents were granted anonymity.

“I’m definitely not happy with where America was when Trump was president. And I’m not happy with where America is, now that Biden’s president,” a respondent, who was identified as a black man from Cleveland, said. “We’ve already had years of both of them being president and with no kind of good results. So I’m hoping there’s some other, you know, candidate or alternative besides these two.”
