Music sensation Oliver Anthony shared biblical insights with Joe Rogan Thursday, surprising the podcast host and UFC commentator with Proverbs 4:20.

Anthony has had a meteoric rise since his hit “Rich Men North of Richmond” released in August, and his Christian faith is a major cornerstone of his life, Anthony said on the Joe Rogan Experience.

He has “found a lot of peace from this book,” the singer said.

Rogan asked about Anthony’s experience reading the Bible.

“What was the feeling that you have?” Rogan asked. “What caused you to act? What was it like when you did it?”

Anthony explained that it was health complications and a moment of hopelessness after a visit to the emergency room that started him on his journey.

“I just felt hopeless, like almost the way a child feels hopeless when, you know, you can’t find your parent or something, like a 4-year-old that can’t find his parents or something. I was just like, just didn’t have anything left in me,” he said. “I just decided like right then and there, like, I know I can’t do this anymore, but I know there’s things I need to do, and I just told God … I was like, just let me do it, and I’ll give all this s*** up. I’ll give up the weed, and I’ll quit getting drunk, and I’ll quit being so angry about things.”

Whatever had or had not happened, Anthony vowed he would start over again and make God the focus.

The singer changed his perspective and found wisdom in the Bible, some of which he shared with Rogan.

“There’s things it says, and I’ll be very brief with this. I promise … Ironically, it’s Proverbs 4:20, which I thought you would like.”

The selection made Rogan, who is an outspoken fan of marijuana, laugh.

“Read it,” Rogan said. “Preach.”

“My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it,” the passage reads.

“Keep your mouth free from perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.”

“That’s pretty f****** profound,” Rogan said.

Proverbs is like that, according to Anthony.

“It’s not preachy. It’s not what you think … It’s good guidance that you would want a father to give to his son.”
