Former Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell has entered hospice for liver failure, and those close to him say he only has a small number of days left to live.
“Although Steve is here with us still, sadly it will only be for a short time,” band manager Robert Hayes told People magazine. “Steve is resting at home being cared for by his fiancé and hospice care.”

Harwell, 56, departed Smash Mouth almost two years ago after a controversial performance at a beer and wine festival where he slurred his words and yelled at the audience. The band has continued to perform with vocalist Zach Goode taking the leading man mantle.
Harwell has faced several health problems over the years, including cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and Wernicke’s encephalopathy, according to TMZ, who was told by Harwell’s manager “he likely has only a week or so to live.”
According to the outlet, the former Smash Mouth frontman has dealt with substance abuse problems as well, recently having been treated for liver failure at a hospital.
Smash Mouth was formed in the mid-1990s and skyrocketed to fame several years later, notably with the hit single “All Star,” which was bolstered by appearing in the first Shrek film. The band helped define a new generation of music as the 2000s approached and then arrived with a blend of pop and rock sounds.

Harwell was known for having “one of the most recognizable voices from his generation,” Hayes said in his statement to People. “Steve loved the fans and loved to perform. … his legacy will live on through the music.”
“All my thoughts, prayers and well wishes are with my friend Steve Harwell,” Poison frontman Bret Michaels posted to social media after Harwell’s condition became public. “I knew you’re a fighter, keep fighting my brother.”
