Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) announced a narrower public health order temporarily banning the carry of guns at parks and playgrounds in the Albuquerque, New Mexico, area after a broader suspension was struck down by a federal judge.
The new order comes a week after Lujan Grisham instituted an order that suspended the right to carry firearms in the greater Albuquerque area. The governor also announced the new order would be implemented as a replacement for the previous public health order.

“I’m going to continue pushing to make sure that all of us are using every resource available to put an end to this public health emergency with the urgency it deserves,” Lujan Grisham said in a statement. “I will not accept the status quo — enough is enough.”
The health order suspended the right to carry firearms at parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque as well as Bernalillo County.
Lujan Grisham also announced the order with the support of the leaders of both chambers of the state legislature.
“My wife and I are raising our two young children in Albuquerque. I want them — and all New Mexicans — to not only feel safe in our communities, but also feel proud of this place we call home,” Democratic state House Speaker Javier Martinez said. “Our commitment to these issues is deep and it is personal. We will not let the politics of the day, or anything else, distract us from working together — city, county, and state leaders and law enforcement — to move forward real solutions that make our communities safer.”

The previous order faced swift backlash, with several local leaders saying they would not enforce the ban and arguing it unconstitutional. Both orders from Lujan Grisham came after she declared a public health emergency on gun violence in the state.
A federal judge had halted the implementation of the previous public health order on Wednesday, saying it defied recent Supreme Court rulings.
