The prime minister’s visit is part of a landmark deal called AUKUS, which is a key move in Biden’s efforts to rally U.S. allies in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region to enhance economic competition with China. The visit highlights the president’s long-term goals even as war rages in Ukraine and Israel.

The goal of the visit is to establish a partnership between the U.S. and Australia to build maritime infrastructure and lay undersea cables to strengthen internet connectivity, senior Biden administration officials told the Associated Press ahead of the prime minister’s arrival.

The press briefing will begin at 1:15 p.m. Eastern time in the White House’s Rose Garden on Wednesday.
