Louisiana State University fifth-year senior Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, capping off an exceptional season as the Tigers’ quarterback.

Daniels won the award, bestowed annually to the most outstanding player in college football, over fellow quarterbacks Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix, from the universities of Washington and Oregon, respectively. Ohio State University wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. rounded out the finalists, finishing fourth.

Although the Tigers finished 9-3, the worst record among the four teams with a finalist, Daniels dazzled as a dual threat all season long. The transfer from Arizona State University posted career highs in completion percentage (72.2%), passing yards (3,812), passing touchdowns (40), and rushing yards (1,134). Penix threw for more yards and Nix was more accurate, but neither came close to establishing a ground presence like that of Daniels.

“I want to thank all my teammates, from Arizona State to LSU,” Daniels said. “You’re my brothers. You work so hard every day, inspiring me to be my best.”

Of the 928 electors, 503 cast their first-place votes for Daniels, while Penix received 292 and Nix garnered 51. Earlier in the week, the native of San Bernardino, California, also won the AP Player of the Year award.

Daniels is the third LSU quarterback to win the award, joining Joe Burrow, who also led the Tigers to a national championship in 2019, and Billy Cannon, who won it in 1959.

LSU is set to take on the University of Wisconsin Badgers in the ReliaQuest Bowl at noon on New Year’s Day, but Daniels has not said if he will play in the game. He may decide to skip the game as he prepares for the 2024 NFL draft.
