The 2024 election cycle will be in full swing come the new year, with multiple debates, trials, and primaries expected that will dominate voter attention.
Former President Donald Trump’s commanding lead over his Republican rivals is setting the stage for a rematch against President Joe Biden. However, Trump is expected to spend much of 2024 in a courtroom, defending himself against both civil lawsuits and federal cases.

Here is what is coming up in the year to come:
January 2024
Wednesday, Jan. 10: CNN will host a Republican presidential primary debate at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, less than one week before the Iowa caucuses.
Thursday, Jan. 11: Closing arguments are scheduled to begin in the $250 million civil trial in which Trump is accused of business fraud, a case brought forward by New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, in New York. The judge has already ruled Trump is liable for making fraudulent statements, but other claims and the final penalty have yet to be decided.
Thursday, Jan. 11: President Joe Biden’s son Hunter will be arraigned in Los Angeles on three felony and six misdemeanor counts.
Monday, Jan. 15: Iowa will hold its GOP caucuses.
Tuesday, Jan. 16: E. Jean Carroll is scheduled to take Trump to trial for a second time in New York City for defamation. After a jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Caroll and ordering him to pay $5 million, she is now taking him to trial again for defamation over his initial denials of Carroll’s story.
Thursday, Jan. 18: ABC News will hold a Republican presidential primary debate at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, days before the primaries.
Sunday, Jan. 21: CNN will host a Republican presidential primary debate from New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire, ahead of the primaries.
Thursday, Jan. 23: New Hampshire will hold primaries for both Republicans and Democrats.
Monday, Jan. 29: A civil trial is scheduled in a lower-profile class-action lawsuit accusing Trump and his company of promoting a pyramid scheme.
February 2024
Saturday, Feb. 3: South Carolina will hold its Democratic primary.
Tuesday, Feb. 6: Nevada will hold its Democratic Primary.
Thursday, Feb. 8: Nevada will hold its Republican caucuses.
Saturday, Feb. 24: South Carolina will hold its Republican primary.
Tuesday, Feb. 27: Michigan will hold primaries for both Republicans and Democrats.
March 2024
Saturday, March 2: Idaho holds its Republican caucuses.
Sunday, March 3: Washington, D.C., holds its Republican primary.
Monday, March 4: North Dakota holds its Republican caucuses.
Monday, March 4: Trial is expected to begin in Washington, D.C., in the case in which special counsel Jack Smith’s office charged Trump with four felony counts for allegedly participating in multiple criminal conspiracies to subvert the 2020 election results. He has pleaded not guilty.
Tuesday, March 5 — Super Tuesday: Primaries will occur in Alabama, Arkansas, North Carolina, Texas, American Samoa, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and California for both parties. Alaska will hold its GOP presidential primary, and Iowa will hold its Democratic caucuses.
Tuesday, March 12: Primaries will occur in Mississippi, Georgia, and Washington for both parties. Hawaii will hold its GOP presidential primary, and the Northern Mariana Islands will hold its Democratic presidential primary.
Sunday, March 17: Puerto Rico will hold its Democratic presidential primary.
Tuesday, March 19: Primaries will occur in Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Illinois, and Ohio for both parties.
Saturday, March 23: Louisiana will hold its primary for both parties. Missouri will hold its Democratic primary.
Monday, March 25: Trump is scheduled to go on criminal trial in his hush money case. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records regarding reimbursements made from the Trump Organization to Michael Cohen, who had paid two women who alleged to have had affairs with Trump to be silent. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty.
April 2024
Tuesday, April 2: Primaries will occur in Delaware, New York, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin for both parties.
Saturday, April 6: Primaries will occur in Alaska, Hawaii, and North Dakota for Democrats.
Saturday, April 13: Wyoming will hold its Democratic caucuses.
Tuesday, April 23: Pennsylvania will hold primaries for both parties.
May 2024
Tuesday, May 7: Indiana will hold primaries for both parties.
Tuesday, May 14: Primaries will occur in Maryland, Nebraska, and West Virginia for both parties.
Monday, May 20: Trump’s trial begins in the other case brought by the special counsel’s office in Fort Pierce, Florida. The former president faces 40 charges in federal court over allegedly mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House and attempting to obstruct the government’s retrieval of those records. Trump has pleaded not guilty.
Tuesday, May 21: Primaries will occur in Kentucky and Oregon for both parties.
Thursday, May 23: Idaho will hold its Democratic presidential caucuses.
June 2024
Tuesday, June 4: Primaries will occur in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota for both parties. Washington, D.C., will hold its Democratic presidential primary.
Saturday, June 8: Guam will hold its Democratic presidential primary.
July 2024
Monday, July 15 to Thursday, July 18: Republicans will nominate their presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
August 2024
Monday, Aug. 5: Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has proposed beginning the election racketeering trial against Trump. Prosecutors are building a case about how Trump and his supporters tried to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election in the Peach State.
Monday, Aug. 19 to Thursday, Aug. 22: Democrats will nominate their presidential candidate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.
November 2024
Tuesday, Nov. 5: The general election for the next president of the United States. The contest is expected to be a rematch between Biden and Trump.
