A poll from Politico/Morning Consult found that three-fifths of Republicans support leaving abortion to the states, though the share jumped to three-fourths when told that it was Trump’s stated position. The share of independents who support the position also jumped from 47% to 51% when told it was Trump’s position.

Democrats were also supportive of the idea states should determine abortion laws (41%), but popularity for the plan dropped (38%) when they were told it was Trump’s position.

The poll illustrates the possible payoff in Trump’s approach to abortion, as well as his continued hold on the Republican Party. It also waves off concerns that his stance could cost support from the anti-abortion segment of the party.

The poll also found significant support for a moderated abortion stance floated by some Republicans — 54% of respondents support a federal ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother.

The poll also found wide support for in vitro fertilization in the general public, as well as among Republicans, with 64% supporting IVF access.

The poll was conducted from April 12 to 15, surveying 1,993 registered voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
