Over the Christmas holiday, some museums, stores, and restaurants in Washington, D.C., will be closed, and others will have limited hours. However, while holiday schedules vary, a few places will remain open in the district. Over the Christmas holiday, some museums, stores, and restaurants in Washington, D.C., will be closed, and others will have limited hours. However, while holiday schedules vary, a few places will remain open in the district.

Museums

  • All 17 Smithsonian museums will be open on Christmas Eve, but closed on Christmas Day. This includes the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of Natural History, the American Art Museum, Smithsonian Gardens, the African American History and Culture Museum, the Air and Space Museum, and others.
  • The Holocaust Museum will be open on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
  • The Museum of the Bible will be open on Christmas Eve until 4 p.m., but it will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • The International Spy Museum will be open on Christmas Eve until 3 p.m., but closed on Christmas Day.
  • The People’s House will be open to visitors on Christmas Eve until 4 p.m. and will close at 5 p.m. It will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • Traditionally, the National Building Museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which means the museum will be closed on Christmas Eve this year, as it falls on a Wednesday. The museum will also be closed on Christmas Day.
  • Planet Word will be open until 4 p.m., with the last visitors allowed 90 minutes before closing. The museum will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • The National Gallery of Art will be open all day on Christmas Eve, but closed on Christmas Day.
  • The National Archives museum and rotunda will be open on Christmas Eve, but closed on Christmas Day.
  • Trader Joe’s will be open until 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, but will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • Aldi will operate on limited hours at the discretion of each location, but will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • Amazon Fresh will close early on Christmas Eve at 7 p.m. and will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • Wegman’s will close early on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. and remain closed through Christmas Day. It will reopen at 6 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 26.
  • Costco will be open on Christmas Eve but closed on Christmas Day.
  • Walmart will be open for limited hours, which vary by location, on Christmas Eve, but will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • Target will be open for extended holiday hours until midnight on Dec. 23. Then, on Christmas Eve, the stores will close at 8 p.m. and remain closed through Christmas Day.
  • Sam’s Club will be open until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, but will be closed for Christmas Day.
  • Le Diplomate will be open for its normal hours.
  • The Greenhouse will be open for its normal hours.
  • No Goodbyes will be open for its normal hours.
  • Lyle’s will be open for its normal hours.
  • Nobu will be open for its normal hours.
  • L’Avant Garde will be open for its normal hours.
  • CUT by Wolfgang Puck will be open for its normal hours.
  • 2Fifty Texas BBQ will be open for its normal hours.
  • Bistro Du Jour will be open for its normal hours.
  • The Inn at Little Washington will be open for its normal hours.
  • Founding Farmers will be open for its normal hours.
  • McDonald’s will be open for its normal hours.
  • Subway will close early on Christmas Eve and remain closed on Christmas Day.
  • Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse will open earlier than usual on Christmas Eve, starting at 11 a.m., and then will be closed for Christmas Day.
  • Capital Grille will close one hour early on Christmas Eve at 8 p.m. and will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • Fogo de Chaõ will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, closing at 9:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 9 p.m. on Christmas Day.
  • Succotash will be open during its regular hours on Christmas Eve, but will open at noon on Christmas Day until 8 p.m.
  • Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen will open one hour later, at noon, and close one hour earlier, at 9 p.m., on Christmas Eve.

Government offices

  • The Department of Motor Vehicles will be open on Christmas Eve, but closed on Christmas Day.
  • The U.S. Postal Service will be open on Christmas Eve, but will be closed on Christmas Day. Regular post office hours and mail delivery will resume on Friday, Dec. 26.
