Talk show host Bill Maher raged against a lack of protections around children in Hollywood, accusing the left of overlooking child abuse “if the guy from the wrong party calls it out.”

A segment on Friday’s airing of Real Time with Bill Maher was centered on the documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. This documentary revealed patterns of child abuse on Nickelodeon Studios, where actor Drake Bell revealed himself to be the once-anonymous minor behind a criminal case against Nickelodeon acting coach Brian Peck. Bell alleged he was repeatedly and violently assaulted by Peck, who was ultimately convicted in 2004.

“It also exposed hypocrisy because it must be pointed out that when the evil Governor of Florida was saying the exact same thing about kids and creepy stuff at Disney that liberals now find intolerable at Nickelodeon, he was dismissed as a hick and a bigot,” Maher said of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).

However, as Maher pointed out on the show, Peck went on to work for the Disney Channel on its children’s show The Suite Life of Zack & Cody following his conviction. Disney subsequently fired him when it discovered his convict status.

“You know Willie Sutton said he robbed banks cause that’s where the money is, and the reason we find pedophiles in the Boy Scouts and the rectory and kids TV is, that’s where the kids are,” Maher said. “DeSantis wasn’t wrong, but we’re so tribal now the left will overlook child f***ing if the guy from the wrong party calls it out.”

Maher expressed his disagreement with children becoming more involved in drag shows and storytelling events as a clip of a five-year-old at a bar tipping a drag queen a dollar played in the background. Behind the drag performer was a sign that read, “it’s not going to lick itself.” The talk show host suggested that in order to keep his “liberal ID card,” he might have to pretend he’s fine with children at these drag events.

“But maybe we should think about giving kids a break from our cultural wars for a minute or at least until the election is over,” Maher said.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris made history when she invited a drag queen in costume to her residence for a pride event. Harris went on to continue to invite other drag queens to subsequent Pride Month celebrations, including RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby.
