A 17-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department was shot on Monday after people rammed an SUV into a Prada store during an attempted burglary.

Officers responded to the north side location at about 4 a.m. after reports of a crash-and-grab, and a firefight ensued after authorities encountered an armed person, according to a report, citing Superintendent of Police Larry Snelling.

“The officers attempted to deescalate by telling him to drop the gun,” Snelling said.

“He did not,” he added. “Shortly thereafter, there was an exchange of gunfire.”

A 55-year-old officer was hit in the leg, and the man, who had also become wounded, attempted to flee on foot, the report noted

Both were taken to receive medical attention, Snelling said.

The wounded officer has since been discharged from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to a report.
