Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), seen as a possible 2024 running mate for former President Donald Trump, burnished her loyalty credentials Thursday when she claimed she would not have certified the 2020 election results if she were vice president on Jan. 6, 2021.
Stefanik said on Thursday she did not think former Vice President Mike Pence had the right approach in certifying the election results and would not have made the same decision.
“I would not have done what Mike Pence did. I don’t think that was the right approach,” Stefanik said on CNN. “I specifically stand by what I said on the House floor.”
Stefanik voted against certifying the results of the 2020 election, claiming there was “unconstitutional overreach” in states such as Pennsylvania. However, Stefanik did vote to certify the results in Arizona.
“I think it’s very important that we continue to stand up for the Constitution and have legal and secure elections, which we did not have in 2020,” Stefanik said.
Pence has stood by his decision to certify the results of the election, even after the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill, stating that it was his constitutional duty to do so. Trump had allegedly tried to push Pence into not counting the results of certain states that voted for President Joe Biden, which would have overturned the results of the election.

“I know by God’s grace, we did our duty that day, to act out the express language of the Constitution of the United States,” Pence told ABC News last year.
Other possible contenders for Trump’s vice presidential pick include Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD).
