Republicans have increasingly grown concerned over Democrats’ ability to get more votes via mail-in ballots, which played a major role in the 2020 presidential election. Trump and many within the party have sought to restrict the practice, citing fears of fraud, but others are looking to adopt it more broadly. Pennsylvania Republicans are looking to lead the charge of Republicans embracing the practice.

Republican officials told Reuters that they are looking to raise $8 million to fund an educational campaign aimed at urging more Republicans to utilize mail-in voting.

“We just can’t let Democrats continue to have this advantage if we want to win,” Dave White, a Republican helping to organize the drive, told the outlet.

Though Trump isn’t crazy about the practice, the effort isn’t being undertaken behind his back. Business owner Jim Worthington, a major Trump ally, is involved in the push and said he has spoken with Trump directly about it.

“I’ve told him that if he comes out and endorses mail ballots, 75% of Republicans in the state will follow his lead. I have been assured that Trump and his team will embrace mail ballots,” he said.

Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA), a member of Trump’s Pennsylvania leadership team, has taken a head role in the project as well.

Mail-in ballots played a key role in President Joe Biden’s snagging of Pennsylvania in 2020, having received 1,995,691 as opposed to Trump’s 595,538. Biden won by just 2%.
