President Donald Trump announced Sunday afternoon a peace deal had been reached between the United States and Iran, concluding months of fighting in the Middle East that began in February.
Trump said “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete” in the announcement on Truth Social. “Congratulations to all!”
Trump also authorized the “immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade” as well as the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz. He later clarified the global shipping route will reopen on Friday upon the signing of the deal.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbahz Sharif said in an X post “we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Uran has been REACHED.” The announcement says “mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week” that will “lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony.”
Trump said Saturday the peace deal would be signed on Sunday, though previous promises of progress in the negotiations have not always materialized. “The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow,” Trump said then, adding that “Our relationship with Iran is a much different one than previous Administrations have had.”
The deal is expected to extend the ceasefire between the two countries by 60 days and will allow for detailed talks on Iran’s nuclear program. Oil prices dropped in response to the initial announcement.
Trump’s announcement comes as his and the broader GOP’s approval ratings have sunk due to the unpopularity of the Iran war and its impact on domestic gas prices. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to ease pressure on fuel prices by restoring a critical route for global oil shipments.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed to Iranian state media the memorandum of understanding had been finalized.
“Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” Pakistan’s announcement also said.
