Gas prices decreased again on Thursday, beginning the month of August slightly cheaper than at the beginning of July.
The average price for a gallon of regular gas in the country was $3.483 on the first of the month, according to AAA. This was a slight decrease from Wednesday, the last day in July. It is also a slight decrease from exactly a month ago when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.491.
Gas prices remain an important issue heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the likely Democratic nominee, will have to indicate how she will address the country’s high gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.
While prices have fluctuated in 2024, prices have decreased in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Washington, D.C.
To start the month of August, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the nation’s capital was $3.701. This was an increase from the last day in July, when the cost was $3.692. Regular gas is, however, less expensive in Washington, D.C. than a week ago when the average price was $3.71 per gallon. Prices are more expensive, however, than a month ago, when drivers in the district paid $3.665 per gallon.
Virginia
In Virginia, the average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas was $3.357 to begin the last full month of summer. This decreased from Thursday’s average price of $3.369 per gallon. Gas prices are also less expensive in the state than a week ago when regular-grade gas was $3.415 per gallon. Prices, however, are more expensive now compared to a month ago when the price for a gallon of regular was $3.328.
Maryland
The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Maryland on August 1 was $3.456. This was a decrease from the last day of July, when the price of regular gas averaged $3.464 per gallon. Prices are also less expensive than a week ago, when the price was $3.503 per gallon. Prices are also lower today than a month ago when people in Maryland paid $3.563 for a gallon of regular gas.
Delaware
The average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.366 in Delaware on Thursday. This was a decrease from the last day in July in the First State when the average cost was $3.372. This is cheaper than a week ago when the average cost was $3.409. There has been a sizable drop in gas prices from a month ago when drivers in the First State paid $3.502 for a gallon of regular gas.

Mississippi
Mississippi continues to be the state with the least expensive gas prices. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Mississippi to begin August was $2.968. It is the only state in the nation with an average price for regular gas under $3.
Hawaii
Hawaii is the state with the most expensive gas in the nation, coming in with an average of $4.669 per gallon for regular gas on Thursday. The Aloha State begins August still higher in gas prices than California, which Hawaii recently overtook for the dubious distinction of the state with the most expensive gas prices for a gallon of regular gas. In California, a gallon of regular gas averaged $4.646 on the first day of August.
