The national average price for a gallon of regular gas has decreased to its lowest since January 2024, coming in at $3.084 on Friday to end the week, according to AAA.

Friday’s gas prices remained the same as Thursday and both prices were less expensive than a week ago, when the average price for regular gas was $3.099. Prices are also cheaper than a month ago when gas was $3.203 per gallon. Gas prices have trended downward throughout the country since late summer.

The cost of gas was an important topic in the country’s political discourse for much of the last few years, as President Joe Biden was burdened with high gas prices during most of his term. Earlier this year, gas prices began to fall. Yet despite this string of decreases at the pumps, gas prices remain higher today than during the last months and days of President-elect Donald Trump’s first term. Nevertheless, gas prices continue to fluctuate across the nation and it remains to be seen what gas prices will be under a second Trump administration.

Currently, Hawaii is the state with the most expensive gas prices in the country, with a cost of $4.572 per gallon. Oklahoma has the least expensive gas in the nation, costing $2.592 per gallon. Click here to see the cost of gas in different states. Maryland

Gas prices in Maryland increased significantly on Friday, with the average price for a gallon of regular gas soaring to $3.167 from Thursday’s price of $3.11. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the state cost $3.047. Up until the last couple of days, prices in Maryland have trended downward for the last month, with a few exceptions. Despite the recent increase, prices remain cheaper than a month ago in Maryland when residents paid $3.242 for a gallon of regular gas.

Virginia

Gas prices in Virginia have been hovering around the $3 per gallon range for the last week. On Friday, the state’s average price for a gallon of regular gas increased slightly to $3.015, a rise from Thursday’s price of $3.012. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the state was $2.996 per gallon. Prices are less expensive than a month ago when Virginians paid $3.129 per gallon for regular gas.

Delaware

Gas prices in Delaware also increased on Friday rising to over $3 a gallon with a price of $3.068. This was over six cents higher than Thursday’s price of $3.006 per gallon. Until recently, gas prices in the First State had remained in the same range, fluctuating between $3.00 and 2.95 per gallon. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the state cost $2.952. However, even with the recent increase, gas prices in Delaware are much lower today than a month ago when a gallon of regular gas cost $3.188.

Washington, D.C.

Like every other area in the Delmarva region, gas prices increased in Washington, D.C. on Friday, with the average price for a gallon of regular gas rising to $3.259. This was the slightest rise from Thursday’s price of $3.256. Gas prices in the nation’s capital have fluctuated between $3.25 and $3.30 over the last month. For example, a week ago, the average price for a gallon of gas in Washington was $3.274 per gallon. And a month ago the average price for a gallon of gas in the nation’s capital was even more expensive with a price of $3.305 per gallon.
