Gas prices dropped again on Sunday as the average cost for a gallon of regular gas decreased to $3.414, according to AAA. It was the second consecutive day of decreases after Saturday’s price of $3.421 per gallon. 

Both prices are less expensive than a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas cost averaged $3.445. It’s also cheaper than from a month ago when the price was $3.506 per gallon. 

Gas prices remain a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, will have to indicate how she will address the country’s high gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

While prices have fluctuated in 2024, they have decreased in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Washington, D.C.

Gas prices slightly increased in the nation’s capital on Sunday with a gallon of regular costing $3.668. This was ever-so-slightly more expensive than on Saturday, when the price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.667. Both prices, however, are cheaper than from a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas cost $3.686. It’s also cheaper than a month ago when the price for regular gas was $3.711 per gallon.

Virginia

On Sunday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped to $3.294 per gallon. This was a slight drop from Saturday’s price of $3.30 per gallon. Like much of the rest of the country, current prices in Virginia are less expensive than from a week ago when regular gas cost $3.353 per gallon. A month ago, a gallon of regular gas in Virginia was $3.446.

Maryland

Gas prices also dropped in Maryland on Sunday with regular gas costing $3.378 per gallon. This was a drop from Saturday when it cost $3.378 for a gallon of regular gas. Both prices are cheaper than a week ago, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Maryland was $3.475. A month ago, regular gas in the state cost $3.539 per gallon.

Delaware

In Delaware, the average price for a gallon of regular gas also dipped on Sunday, coming in at $3.296. This was a very slight decrease from Saturday when it cost $3.301 per gallon. Prices were more expensive a week ago, when the average price for a gallon of regular gas cost $3.418. A month ago gas prices were marginally more expensive, coming in at $3.476.

Hawaii

Hawaii is the state with the highest gas prices in the country. However, this has been a recent development after California held this distinction for most of 2024. On Sunday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $4.668. This was a slight increase from Saturday’s price of $4.671. A week ago, gas in the Aloha State was $4.662, while a month ago, the cost for a gallon of regular gas was $4.695.

Mississippi

Mississippi has the least expensive gas prices in the nation, continuing a monthslong trend in 2024. On Sunday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas cost $2.958. This is a slight increase from Saturday, when the average price was $2.96. A a week ago, a gallon of regular gas cost $2.963. A month ago, gas in Mississippi was slightly under $3 a gallon, coming in at $2.998. Today, Mississippi is the only state in the nation with an average price for regular gas under $3.
