Talk show host Phil McGraw, better known as Dr. Phil, has joined the growing number of people to speak out against gender transition surgeries for children, criticizing the medical industry for doing such surgeries amid a lack of evidence that shows they help the children.

McGraw said he found it “interesting” how many people in the medical industry refer to gender surgeries for children as “gender-affirming care” when such a term is actually referring to “hormonal therapy or sexual reassignment surgery.” He also criticized how all the major medical associations have “signed off on this.”

“And I have never seen those organizations sign off on anything with less information as to whether or not it does long-term harm of anything in my life,” McGraw said in a guest appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience. “And when I ask about that, when I bring that up, then they immediately label you as transphobic, and I thought that the deal was: ‘First do no harm.’”

McGraw noted how many countries in Europe, including Norway and Sweden, have opted not to allow transgender surgeries for minors, as they could not say “in good conscience” that these surgeries harm the child. The talk show host argued that the countries deciding this are doing so “because it does harm,” noting how children are not old enough to make life-altering decisions.

“We’re going to do some shows that are already taped that are revealing what the real results of this are, and I think people are going to be shocked that these medical organizations have signed off on this,” McGraw said. “I think they’ve just given into the pressure.”

Rogan agreed, noting how a Canadian government official, Randall Garrison, had recently claimed that there is “no such thing as parental rights in Canada,” with Rogan calling such a statement “wild.” McGraw added that the United States is “not far behind that” ideology, noting how he has spoken to teachers who believe they have a duty to hide their student’s gender from parents.

The issue of transgender surgeries for children has become a growing topic of discussion within the U.S., with some celebrities like McGraw joining those in speaking out against such medical surgeries for children. Last year, musical artist Dee Snider, an LGBT ally, received pushback for stating that children do not have the “mental capabilities” to make decisions “that will affect them for the rest of their lives.”

Last year, former President Donald Trump said he would ban transgender surgeries for minors if elected president again. The campaign promise was made a few months after President Joe Biden, who is also seeking a second term, claimed that lawmakers attempting to ban transgender surgeries for minors was “immoral.”
