Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg promised Saturday to charge the immigrants who were caught on camera attacking two police officers this week.

A New York Police Department officer and lieutenant were attacked by several immigrants just outside a shelter near Times Square. Police are searching for other suspects involved in the attack. All those arrested so far were released with no bail within hours of their respective arrests.

“It is clear from video and other evidence that some of the most culpable individuals have not yet been identified or arrested, and we are working hand in hand with the NYPD to find and hold them accountable for their despicable acts,” Bragg said in a statement. “We are simultaneously preparing to present charges to the Grand Jury on Tuesday and will update the public as soon as legally permissible. We will not rest until every person who assaulted a police officer in this awful attack is held accountable.”

Bragg’s announcement comes after a Saturday demonstration in Times Square protesting the violence. New York Mayor Eric Adams responded to the attack on the pair of police officers with a call for legal reform that would allow him to deport immigrants charged with violent crimes. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) similarly called for their deportation.

“An attack against a police officer is an attack against our entire society,” NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban said in a statement. “We will work tirelessly with the office of the Manhattan district attorney to identify and arrest every person who participated in this event.”

Adams reported that over 157,000 immigrants have arrived in New York City since last year. That number is 1 1/2 times the population of Albany, New York.

According to the most recent press release from the office of Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX), Texas has bused over 37,600 immigrants to New York City since August 2022. That effort has sent immigrants to other major cities, including Los Angeles, Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Washington, as well.
