Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker said he chose to wear a tie with an anti-abortion message during a visit to the White House to “represent the unborn.”

Butker’s visit to the White House was made last June after the Chiefs won the 2024 Super Bowl, during which he wore a tie with the Latin phrase “Vulnerari Praesidio,” translating to “protect the most vulnerable.” Ahead of the visit, the Chiefs player explained that he thought the White House was “an amazing place” but found it unfortunate that the Capitol was passing laws that do not “value all human life.”

“So to have a tie that in Latin I thought brought attention to the unborn, because I am trying to learn more Latin, with going to the Latin mass, I picked ‘Vulnerari Praesidio’ which is to protect the most vulnerable,” Butker, a practicing Catholic, said in an interview with EWTN News’s In Depth.

Butker went on to describe the unborn as “the greatest victims in our society” because they are unable to defend or speak out for themselves. As such, he felt that his visit to the White House was the best place to voice his support for the unborn.

The Chiefs player was also asked what he thought needs to be done to create a culture that respects unborn life, to which Butker said would be for the anti-abortion community to talk more about miscarriages. Butker and his wife have experienced three miscarriages in their marriages and noted how talking about the topic shows that they do want to have more children and be supportive of life.

“And even though there is a miscarriage, there is a potential opportunity to bury that child, and I think that shows reverence that this is a human life that we have lost, unfortunately,” Butker said. “Hopefully one day we’ll be able to be with them for eternity in heaven, but it’s also consoling to think that God is more upset and sad at losing that child than we could ever be, and that was very comforting for me to think about that.”

Butker was also asked what he thought about his fellow Chiefs player, Travis Kelce, dating Taylor Swift, whose relationship has been the center of attention for most of the last football season. Butker explained that he would not consider himself “a ‘Swiftie,’” referring to the term used to describe Swift fans, but expressed hope that she and Kelce would one day get married and start a family.

The Chiefs recently finished the latest football season with a Super Bowl win against the San Francisco 49ers with a score of 25-22. The year prior, the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles with a score of 38-35, with the winning team visiting President Joe Biden at the White House in June later that year.
