Washington Examiner columnist Guy Benson pressed just how many Democrats were aware of former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s (D-CA) behavior before sexual assault allegations came out that led to his resignation.

Whisperings of Swalwell’s involvement with women was “almost like an open secret in Democratic politics,” Benson said on Fox Business’s the Evening Edit Thursday.

“Swalwell was a popular, prominent, well-known Trump critic, so as long as he was doing the right things and saying the right thing politically, they [Democrats] didn’t really have the fire burning in them to come after him and hold the power to account,” Benson said.

Benson argued that Democrats are heavy on saying they take accountability, but in this case, they did not.

“I think that if there were an ‘R’ next to his name, we could be having a very different conversation, and we probably would have had it years ago,” Benson said.

Swalwell is under fire after accusers came forward with sexual assault allegations. It prompted an investigation into the former congressman, including one by the Department of Justice. He dropped out of the California gubernatorial race and resigned Tuesday after several staff members called for his resignation.
