Former President Donald Trump slammed the past rhetoric from Democratic officials, including President Joe Biden, about the border being “secure,” claiming it was disinformation and labeling them “masters at it.”

Trump, speaking on Fox News’s Hannity as part of his visit to the southern border on Thursday, claimed Democrats’ spewing pf “disinformation,” on the border and in the past alleging Trump had connections to Russia, was part of how they are “destroying the country.”

“It’s all disinformation — Russia, Russia, Russia — everything they do. The Democrats, and I guess you have to say they’re masters at it, they’ll say something a thousand [times]: ‘The border is great, the border is closed.’ And they’ll say it a thousand different times, and some people are going to believe it,” Trump said.

“I think that’s probably the hardest thing that they’ve got to do because they have destroyed this border. And they’re in the process of destroying our country,” he added.

Democrats have also accused Republicans of spreading disinformation, specifically targeting Trump for his claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him, claims that have not been proven.

While on Hannity, Trump also bashed Biden’s visit and accused the president of planning to travel to the southern border after hearing he would make the trip.

“They found out for sure … that I was coming. Then all of a sudden, they announced that they’re coming, but they went to the wrong area. They went to an area that the governor and myself have done a good job on and is essentially nobody coming through, so you know you’re not seeing it. This area is tough,” Trump said.

Biden’s trip to the southern border on Thursday took the president to Brownsville, Texas, which has seen fewer border crossings than other parts of the border in Texas, such as Eagle Pass, where Trump was.

Trump speculated that the motivation for Democratic officials to allow illegal immigrants to continue to stay in the country rather than be deported is because “they’re stupid or they hate our country.”

The former president also threw jabs at Govs. Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) and Gavin Newsom (D-CA) over their handling of the border, hammering Newsom especially.

“The problem you have is Arizona, you have a governor, very liberal governor, that a lot of people say shouldn’t be the governor, and in California, Newsom’s doing a terrible job. I mean, other than talking about how wonderful it is, that’s about it,” Trump said.

He repeated a criticism of California’s government that he leveled at a speech in Eagle Pass earlier in the day, saying it was giving illegal immigrants “free healthcare, free education, free everything.”

Border security has long been a key campaign issue for Trump, but amid the collapsed Senate border deal, Biden has also made immigration and border security a key part of his recent pitch for another four years.
