President Joe Biden is speaking to the nation after presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was shot during one of his rallies on Saturday.

Biden has announced an independent investigation after Trump was shot in the ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The former president is said to be “fine” after the shooting, but a rallygoer was killed, and two others were critically injured.

Biden spoke with his chief political rival, Trump, on Saturday night, and the current president remarked about the conversation: “I’m just really grateful that he’s doing well and recovering. We had a short but good conversation, and we’re keeping him and his family in our prayers.”

“As I said last night, there is no place in America for this kind of violence or any violence for that matter,” Biden added. “The assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation. It’s not who we are, and we cannot allow this to happen.”

Sunday’s address is likely to be a major moment in the 2024 election race as Biden has come under intense scrutiny following the first presidential debate and the apparent attempted assassination of Trump has only further rallied his supporters around his cause.

Biden’s address will take place at 8 p.m. Eastern. The Republican National Convention is being held this week from Monday to Thursday in Milwaukee, and Trump, following Saturday’s shooting, has already arrived in Wisconsin.
