Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) is demanding information from the National Institutes of Health about a controversial island housing monkeys for animal experiments.

Morgan Island, located in the district Mace represents, serves as an NIH research facility and is commonly known as “Monkey Island” due to its holding of 3,500 rhesus monkeys, WJCL 22 reported. In a letter to the NIH, Macy denounced the experiments on the monkeys and other animals as “barbaric” and demanded transparency about them.

“Concerns have been raised about risky virus experiments on primates and other animals at [Rocky Mountain Laboratory,” she wrote. “Now, I have become aware of disturbing videos, photographs and other documents obtained by the non-profit White Coat Waste Project through a Freedom of
Information Act lawsuit against the NIH that detail RML’s cruel experiments with COVID and other viruses on primates obtained from Morgan Island. Records show that in many cases, these animals are subjected to pain and duress and pain relief is intentionally withheld.”

Mace requested a detailed expense list of how much taxpayer money was put toward animal experimentation in RML and detailed records of the experiments themselves. She also asked how many primates were used in gain-of-function research from fiscal 2022 to date.

Scrutiny against animal research performed by the NIH reached significant prominence when brought forward by House Republicans as a way to criticize Dr. Anthony Fauci, who served in a top role at the organization since 1982.
