Former President Bill Clinton has jumped into the midterm fray, stumping for Democrat David Jolly in his race against Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds in the bid to replace outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

A scandal-plagued Clinton appeared alongside Jolly – a former Republican turned Democrat – at what has been described as an “interfaith event” on the campaign trail in Hollywood, Florida. During the event, Clinton lamented that he is “tired of politicians picking fights” when Americans are trying to afford basic aspects of life.

“You need somebody who will get up every morning and just bust a gut trying to do something that will help you. That’s what you need, and I think that’s someone in David Jolly,” he said, telling the crowd that he, personally, is “not through trying to make things better.”

“And from what I heard tonight, I don’t think you are either. I’m going to have to really practice now, never to refer to David Jolly as Reverend Jolly ever. But I’m here for him and for Gwen Graham because they’re in this race for what I think are the right reasons — to give every Floridian, without regard to race, politics, religion, or you name it — a chance to build a better life for themselves, their children, their state,” Clinton said before pointing to scripture.

“And he has the background, the willingness, the ability, and the determination to get it done. I think we ought to give David Jolly a chance. There’s a big difference between being tired and quitting. That’s why ‘let us not grow weary in doing good’ is one of the Bible’s most important promises,” Clinton said. “For in due season we will reap if we do not faint.”

Clinton failed to provide context of the scripture from Galatians 6, which points largely to focusing on things of the Spirit and reaping eternal life through Jesus, not persevering in a far-left political campaign:

Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.  And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.  So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Democrats have long struggled to get into the governor’s mansion in Florida, which has morphed from a purple state to solid red in the last several years. The red wave seemed to be prompted, in many ways, during the coronavirus pandemic, as DeSantis championed personal freedom over draconian mandates, drawing Americans to the “Free State of Florida.” As it stands, registered Republican voters outnumber registered Democrats by over 1.5 million. These are challenging figures to overcome for the left, paired with the reality that Floridians have not elected a Democrat governor since Lawton Chiles, who was reelected in 1994. While Democrat Charlie Crist also served as Florida’s governor in the time since, he ran as a Republican at the time.

A recent Stetson University poll showed an uphill battle for Jolly, as Donalds leads him in the governor’s race with an 11-point lead.
