A member of former first lady Jill Biden‘s Secret Service detail shot himself in the leg on Friday while she was traveling through Philadelphia International Airport.
“On Friday morning just after 8:30, an on-duty U.S. Secret Service Special Agent suffered a non-life-threatening injury following a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon at the Philadelphia International Airport during a protective assignment,” the Secret Service said in a statement. “There was no impact to the protectee’s movement and they were not present at the time of the incident.
The agency said no other injuries were reported, and the agent is being evaluated, but is in “stable condition.”
There will be a review of the incident by the Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility.
The Philadelphia Police Department said the incident happened “near the 1 PIA Way access point and the Pennsylvania Tower. “
“According to initial reports, the agent was traveling in an unmarked Chevrolet SUV he accidently discharged his firearm,” police said. “Emergency medical services responded to the scene and transported the agent to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition.”
