DES MOINES, Iowa — Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley dismissed former President Donald Trump‘s attorneys’s attempts to convince a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. he should have presidential immunity from special counsel Jack Smith’s election interference case.
“That’s ridiculous. You can’t go and kill a political rival and claim immunity,” Haley said Wednesday during the last Republican primary debate before next week’s Jan. 15 caucuses in Iowa.
Haley was clear that President Joe Biden won the 2020 election, despite Trump’s insistence otherwise. She also contended that Trump undermined state’s rights in his attempts to change the outcome.
“I think what happened on Jan. 6 was a terrible day and I think President Trump will have to answer for it,” she said.

During oral arguments this week, Trump’s legal team was asked whether a president who ordered S.E.A.L. Team 6 to assassinate a political rival would be subject to criminal prosecution.
Trump lawyer John Sauer replied: “Qualified yes — if he is impeached and convicted first.”
