Comedian Shane Gillis will host Saturday Night Live this week, five years after he was hired and nearly immediately fired by the show.

Gillis, 36, was cast in 2019 but never appeared on an episode. A YouTube clip of his podcast captured him making jokes that were deemed anti-Asian and homophobic, and he was quickly fired. He was not replaced that season. Gillis was known for his impersonations of former President Donald Trump.

Since his firing, Gillis’s career has gained momentum. He’s released two comedy specials, the second of which was released on Netflix and spent weeks in the top 10. He is the most popular creator on Patreon with his podcast, Matt and Shane‘s Secret Podcast. He performed at Madison Square Garden last year for comedian Dave Chappelle’s 50th birthday celebration.

Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang, who were both hired at the same time as Gillis, remain in the cast. Lorne Michaels, who was at the helm when Gillis was fired, is also still running the show as its lead producer.

Rapper 21 Savage will be the musical guest for Saturday’s show.
