Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said on Sunday that Dr. Anthony Fauci “should go to prison” for his “dishonesty” regarding how he handled the COVID-19 pandemic as the nation’s chief medical adviser.

Paul, a former ophthalmologist, made the comments in an appearance on WABC 770 AM’s The Cats Roundtable while rehashing his differences with Fauci on the pandemic’s origins and the latter’s transparency with Congress

“For his dishonesty, frankly, he should go to prison. Do you think the scientific knowledge that was gained from this research was worth the deaths of 20 million people?” Paul told host John Catsimatidis of Fauci. “If you lie to Congress, and you’re dishonest, and you won’t accept responsibility. For his mistake in judgment, he should just be pilloried. He should never be accepted.”

“History should judge him as a deficient person who made one of the worst decisions in public health history — in the entire history of the world,” he added.

Paul has long been a critic of how Fauci led the government’s pandemic response, though their feud escalated over their differences on the origins of COVID.

Paul made a criminal referral to the Justice Department against Fauci in July of last year over his emphatic denials to him under oath at a Senate hearing that the National Institute of Health was not funding “gain-of-function” research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Chinese lab where reports allege the virus emanated from.

DOJ has not yet acted on those charges, which would stem from testimony at two Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committees in 2021 and 2022. Fauci, who led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for decades, has denied accusations he lied to the committee.
