Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton‘s Texas rivalry continued on Wednesday, with Cornyn taunting the embattled attorney over his legal troubles.

The feud between the two began in earnest earlier this month when Paxton called Cornyn out over his support for an extensive foreign aid bill, prompting a rebuke. Cornyn hit Paxton again on Wednesday after the attorney general advocated against him for the opening Senate Republican leader position, as well as his position in the Senate generally.

“Hard to run from prison, Ken,” Cornyn said in a post on X, quoting Paxton’s attack against him.

Cornyn’s quip was reading into Paxton’s post that he was proposing himself as a Senate candidate. He has been floating the idea since last September.

“It will be difficult for @JohnCornyn to be an effective leader since he is anti-Trump, anti-gun, and will be focused on his highly competitive primary campaign in 2026,” Paxton said. “Republicans deserve better in their next leader and Texans deserve another conservative Senator.”

Paxton is embroiled in several legal battles but has won sympathy from many conservatives due to his tough stance on border security and support for former President Donald Trump.

Earlier this month, Cornyn responded to an attack by accusing Paxton of spreading “Russian propaganda.”
