Colin Burgess, the original AC/DC drummer has died at the age of 77, according to the band.


Colin Burgess, the original AC/DC drummer has died at the age of 77, according to the band.

“Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess,” the band announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday. “He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.”

A cause of death has not been provided.

Burgess was an Australian who played with the band from its inception in 1973 to 1974, long before the band won any Grammy awards. At the time, the band had Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar, his brother Angus Young on lead guitar, Larry Van Kriedt on bass guitar, and Dave Evans as the lead singer.

Previous to his stint with AC/DC, Burgess played with The Masters Apprentices, a band that touted several top-20 songs. In 1998, the band was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame.

Phil Rudd went on to replace Burgess in AC/DC, although Burgess filled in for Rudd on one occasion in 1975.
