Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on Monday warned that the Supreme Court would strip people of the right to gay marriage and civil rights after it overturns Roe v. Wade.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on Monday warned that the Supreme Court would strip people of the right to gay marriage and civil rights after it overturns Roe v. Wade.

Ocasio-Cortez’s warning comes after a leaked draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito signaled the high court would undo the landmark 1973 abortion case. In a series of tweets, Ocasio-Cortez argued that the court is “coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on” and advocated Congress passing the Women’s Health Protection Act in response to the leaked document.

“As we’ve warned, SCOTUS isn’t just coming for abortion — they’re coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on, which includes gay marriage + civil rights,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

She added that Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) opposition to the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would make it a right for a woman to undergo an abortion procedure, and having Justice Clarence Thomas on the bench, whom she has called on to resign or face impeachment for what she describes as a pattern of ethics violations “involving his wife,” remain problems that need to change.

“Manchin is blocking Congress codifying Roe. House has seemingly forgotten about Clarence Thomas. These 2 points must change,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter.

“People elected Democrats precisely so we could lead in perilous moments like these — to codify Roe, hold corruption accountable, & have a President who uses his legal authority to break through Congressional gridlock on items from student debt to climate. It’s high time we do it,” she continued.

“If we don’t, what message does that send? We can’t sit around, finger point, & hand wring as people’s futures + equality are on the line. It’s time to be decisive, lead with confidence, fight for a prosperous future for all and protect the vulnerable. Leave it all on the field,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

A fellow member of the liberal “Squad” on Capitol Hill, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), also took to Twitter to condemn the leaked draft ruling and call for the passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act.

“Congress must also abolish the filibuster and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to codify Roe v. Wade into law,” Omar tweeted, while also calling for the expansion of the number of justices on the Supreme Court.

“Overturning Roe would put the lives of women across the country at risk. It would fly in the face of decades of precedent and the overwhelming majority of public opinion. And they will not stop here. Expand the court,” Omar said.
