A California public defender died this weekend while on a Mexican vacation celebrating his first wedding anniversary with his wife, but questions linger over how he died.

Numerous news outlets say Elliot Blair was killed in Rosarito Beach on Saturday, with even reported confirmation from authorities. A fundraiser organized for Blair, 33, says, “He was the victim of a brutal crime.” However, the Daily Mail reports that Mexican authorities said Blair’s fall from the fourth floor of the resort hotel was accidental and other local news sources said he had been drinking.

The GoFundMe in honor of Blair also reads, “We wish we could provide everyone with more information, but very limited information has been disclosed by authorities in Mexico.”

Blair and his wife, Kim, had been public defenders in Orange County, California, since 2017, according to the fundraiser. “Elliot was known as a patient and caring advocate. He was the best of us and was loved by countless members of our office and the Orange County legal community. We are heartbroken.”
