Charlie Bailey, Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams’s running mate in the 2022 election, was charged with a DUI in 2011, according to a new report.

The incident took place on May 5, 2011, when he was pulled over for a broken tail light, according to the incident report. After pulling Bailey over, the officer “detected a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from within the passenger compartment” of the car, Fox News reported on Monday.

“I asked Bailey how much he had to drink, and he stated he had consumed one beer and he was giving his friend, Kelly Christian, a ride home,” the arresting officer wrote. “Bailey then became visibly nervous, to the point I could see his hands shaking as he handed me his license. I also observed Bailey’s eyes to be watery in appearance.”

Bailey was arrested and charged with a DUI after he refused to complete any field sobriety evaluations or submit to a portable breath test, according to the report.

The candidate for lieutenant governor pleaded down to reckless driving, which resulted in 12 months of probation, 100 hours of community service, and a $1,400 fine, according to court documents. He was also ordered to submit an alcohol and drug analysis, attend a DUI “risk reduction” course, and participate in a Mothers Against Drunk Driving victim impact panel.

Jones and Bailey, along with Libertarian Ryan Graham, are all running to succeed the position of outgoing Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan. A recent poll by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which had a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points, found that Jones received support from more than 43% of participants in the poll, with Bailey receiving 33% and Graham almost 8%.
