Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who is running for president in 2024, directed his criticism to former President Donald Trump when asked about a poll showing a lack of support for Christie’s presidential run.

Christie appeared on Fox News Sunday and was asked about a poll showing 70% of Republicans saying they would not consider voting for the former governor. When asked if he was running just to serve as a spoiler for Trump, Christie said he is “in this to win” and that what people want “is the truth.”

“The people in the Republican Party, and quite broadly across America, are tired of having political candidates who are snake oil salesman who just do not tell them the truth, who tell them whatever they think they want to hear at the moment and then do not fulfill any of those promises,” said Christie.

He continued, “They’ve lived that in the Republican primary. I was there in 2016 when Donald Trump said he was going to repeal and replace Obama Care and failed to do it. When he said he is going to build a big beautiful wall across the entire border of Mexico and Mexico was going to pay for it. We’ve got a quarter of a wall and not one peso from Mexico.”

Christie also took issue with Trump’s recent statement that the former president could end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, saying that Trump would just do “what he normally does, which is bend down to Vladimir Putin, and get him whatever he wants.”

The former governor said during his appearance that some announcements will be made this week that will show the polling on him is “wrong” and that there is a “broad and wide demand” for a Christie 2024 run. Christie also stated that Trump was only at 4% at this time in 2015, which is why “anyone should be worried about the polling right now.”

Christie and Trump have feuded multiple times since the former president left the White House in 2021, a stark contrast to when Christie was a Trump ally during Trump’s presidency. Last month, Christie criticized Trump’s alleged actions over his handling of classified documents, describing his actions as “reckless;” Christie has also compared Trump to the Harry Potter villain Voldemort.

Trump was the first Republican to announce his candidacy in the 2024 presidential race, and is competing with the likes of Christie, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC). DeSantis is seen by many to be the biggest challenger to the former president.

Biden is running for reelection in the 2024 presidential election, setting up a possible rematch between him and Trump if Trump is the Republican nominee. In June, Biden was asked if his reelection campaign was going to be a “nasty” one, to which he responded by saying, “It depends on who the nominee is.”
