Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said that he will never back former President Donald Trump again.

Christie, a Republican, made the pledge in an interview with Axios. He cited Trump’s recent Waco rally, where he played his song featuring Jan. 6 defendants and a slideshow of the riot.

When asked if he would support the former president as the Republican nominee for president in 2024, Christie said, “I can’t help him. No way.”

“Look, I just can’t,” he said. “When you have the Jan. 6 choir at a rally and you show video of it — I just don’t think that person is appropriate for the presidency.”

He went on to claim that Trump’s age, 76, is another problem, while adding that he doesn’t plan to vote for President Joe Biden either, should he decide to run for reelection.

“I can’t imagine myself voting for Joe Biden, either. I don’t know if I can vote for either of these guys. They’re both too old. They’re both out of touch with what’s going on in the world right now,” Christie said.

Christie defended his past support for Trump, which lasted from the 2016 election to Jan. 6, as simply supporting his party and opposing Hillary Clinton.

“Look, what I thought in 2016 was that [Trump was] going to be the nominee, and I don’t want Hillary Clinton to be the president,” he said. “Did I have concerns about him? Of course, but you probably have concerns about any candidate other than yourself in the end.”

Christie has been floated as a possible centrist Republican candidate in the 2024 election, but he has not formally announced any decision yet.
