Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said that Dr. Anthony Fauci would have been fired from his position as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 2020 if he was president.

Speaking with Tucker Carlson at the Family Leadership Summit in Iowa on Friday, the 2024 candidate contrasted himself with former President Donald Trump by saying he would have fired Fauci.

SOME HOUSE GOP LAWMAKERS PUSH BIDEN IMPEACHMENT, BUT LEADERSHIP IS CAUTIOUS

“I believe Article II of the Constitution means the president has the executive authority. We just say these bureaucrats somehow can’t be held accountable. I disagree with that. I think you can fire him,” said DeSantis.”Had I been president in 2020, Anthony Fauci would have been fired, and you’ve got to be willing to do it.”

DeSantis has made his record of opposition to Fauci a key part of his 2024 presidential campaign, frequently stating that he had the courage to stand against “Faucism,” which included lockdowns and state-mandated vaccinations.

The Florida governor has also used Fauci to attack Republican front-runner Donald Trump, criticizing him for hiring and allowing Fauci to operate throughout the pandemic.
