Beginning in five days, those who receive assistance paying for groceries via food stamps in Virginia will receive their benefits for the month of August.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program distributes monthly benefits from the 1st through the 7th of every month, meaning the first round of benefits for next month begin on Aug. 1.

Food stamps are distributed in Virginia based on case numbers. Those with a case number that ends in 0-3 will see their benefits on Aug. 1, those with a case number ending in 4-5 will see their benefits on Aug. 4, and those with a case number ending in 6-9 will see their benefits on Aug. 7.

The maximum monthly income to be eligible for food stamps for a household of one in Virginia is $2,265, whereas for a household of five, the maximum monthly income to qualify for SNAP in the state is $5,412.

In the Old Dominion, the average SNAP benefit amount per household member is $181. The number of Virginians who are on food stamps is approximately 9% of the state’s population, or roughly 794,600 people.

Food stamps in Virginia can be used to buy “food or food products meant to be eaten by people,” along with seeds and food-producing plants, among other things. Ineligible items for SNAP benefits include non-food items, alcohol, tobacco, medicines, gardening items, cleaning or paper products, pet food, or prepared hot foods.
